About the Workshop

This workshop is created specifically for company members of long-running productions. It can be delivered to cast, technical crew, stage management, orchestra/band and any other show personnel. Through discussion, group exercises and solo reflection, the workshop examines what constitutes a supportive and inclusive working environment. It focuses on codes of professionalism and why these are important to observe on stage, back stage, in the rehearsal room and over the duration of a run.

Although dealing with important and, at times, serious matters, the workshops are creative, enjoyable and respectful of the professional expertise of the participants. They are delivered by our highly experienced facilitators, all of whom have professional backgrounds in performance.

Tonic has delivered Supportive and Inclusive Companies workshops to a wide range of long-running shows in the West End and on tour including Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, Dr Strangelove, My Fair Lady, Wicked (Playful Productions), Witness for the Prosecution (Eleanor Lloyd Productions), Hairspray, Shrek The Musical (Mark Goucher Productions).

What we’ll cover

  • Boundaries in the workplace: what they are, why it’s important to have them at work and especially in the context of doing a long run
  • The importance of recognising and respecting other peoples’ boundaries
  • How lived experience may impact a company member’s time at work and their relationship to the material being performed.
  • The impact that your behaviour or language can have on colleagues, regardless of whether this matches your intent
  • Ways in which company members can act if they witness poor behaviour or language

You’ll come away with

  • A shared understanding established within a company of how they will interact with one another over the course of a run
  • Greater clarity and confidence about what is and is not acceptable
  • Tackle head-on the grey areas that can arise given the intimacy, familiarity and blurring of personal and professional that can occur during a long run/on tour
